#Apophysis

The fractal community!

Apophysis for the Mac/Linux systems

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 28, 2008, 4:55 AM
Saturday, March 8, 2008

Apophysis is not the work of one single person. We are a community and every member deserves recognition for our present success. Both Administrators and Members do what you see here for fun and for the love of our communty. We won't change that!

:spotlight-left:Apophysis 2.07 beta:spotlight-right:

:new::spotlight-left:There is a new Apophysis made for Mac and Linux users, it is Java based.:spotlight-right::new:

~Apophysis-J is a port in java of the famous fractal flame editor apophysis for Windows. It is based on the version 2.07 beta of apophysis. It should run on any machine equipped with a decent java environment (1.4 or higher) and bring the capabilities of this wonderful program to mac and linux users at last.

I've created a new DA account for resources (scripts and plugins) for the new Java port of Apophysis, ~Apophysis-J. This is in anticipation of a lot of Apple and Linux users that may only create Java versions of their scripts and plugins. Since these resources won't work in regular Apo, I wanted a separate place for them. In the long run, I think it is going to be very important from a support nightmare standpoint for Apo artists to have a separate place to post the Java resources so that users of the regular program don't try to install them and run them.

Due to the way memory is allocated by an executable jar, only images of limited size can be rendered internally if the program if started by double-clicking the icon. You have to use the command line to control the memory usage. Also, like the Windows version, apophysis-j can rely on the standalone flam3 renderer to produce final images.

Hello fellow members, this is the new meet and greet section. This is where I will randomly put a members name from the members list so that you can visit someone new and spread the community spirit. So please visit our random deviant of the day and let them know they are part of a great community.

:new: to the Random Deviant section: Now you can view the previous random deviants by going to the membership list website and the last 10 previous random deviants will be on display for you exploration.:new:

(please NO suggestions for a random deviant as all members will be displayed here eventually and randomly. thanks =cmptrwhz.)

Here are the winners from last week's contest, Spring Break! Due to the number of ties and few entries, I'll only be announcing the top two.

First place:

SpringBreak BeachParty by =Rhienel

Second Place:

Flower by ~mycomputersucks

Congrats, you two! Remember: you're out for the next two WTCs.

Be sure to read the rules, which can be found here - [link] . Remember, you can vote for up to three entries! To vote, send the names of your top three deviants in a note entitled WTC Vote to *Apophysis. The votes are due by Friday, March 21st, 2008, at midnight EST!

Here are the entries for the WTC: St. Pat's!

--------

And now, for next week's contest: Natural Disasters! I've noticed Apophysis's potential to make great disastrous-looking fractals, so I want you to make something that would wreak havoc upon our planet! Possible ideas are (but not limited to): floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, drought, earthquake...you get the idea. :D Have fun!

Examples:

To enter, send a note to *Apophysis entitled WTC Entry with the thumbcode of your deviation. Entries for the Natural Disasters theme are due by Midnight EST on Friday, March 21st, 2008. Good luck, and have fun!

I just use Wine. It's bound to be faster. There's only one annoying bug, but I've already submitted a bugfix to Zueuk :). I wish I could find where the bug was in Wine, though. Mac users can use Darwine.

I just created a DA page for ~Apophysis-J resources. If anyone has any java based plugins or scripts that they would like to contribute, please let me know. I'm wanting to post as many as I can there.

Even though the Java port may be a bit slower, I think in the long run that the enhancements to it will make it a viable option. For example, it already has an option to natively embed the fractal parameters into the comment section of the rendered image. FLAM3 will do that as well, but FLAM3 will not handle plugins. This will do both.

The few times I've run Apophysis under Wine in Linux, I never had a problem. However, I've not done it in quite a while. Just can't seem to take the time to get linux set back up (and to think it wasn't that long ago, I was as happy as a pig in sh*t using command line linux and only using a resource hungry GUI [on Linux or any flavour of 'doze] when i had to).

it looks great but I have a major issue I don't see anyone addressing... how DO you allocate the memory in OS X ?

I wish someone would make a native POSIX version. Java has a tendency to cause memory leaks, which can lead to ram hogging down the road.
